National Trust of Guernsey

The National Trust of Guernsey is an association which aims to preserve and enhance the beauty, historic buildings and heritage of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

Originally founded in 1960, the association became The National Trust of Guernsey in 1967.

In 1968 the Trust as part of a joint venture with La Societe Guernesiaise established the Guernsey Folk Museum in a complex of buildings at Saumarez Park which had previously been home to a display of an Old Guernsey Kitchen setup as part of the 1951 Festival of Britain. The museum has expanded over the years to become the Folk & Costume Museum which now overseen by the trust tells the story of the everyday lives of the people of Guernsey over the last 250 years through a selection of museum objects but also the island's most extensive costume collection.

The headquarters of the Trust is at 26 Cornet Street which is possibly the earliest remaining complete building within St Peter Port's medieval boundaries. The property since 1987 has been used to house a Victorian shop and parlour which offers a range of traditional sweets and gifts.

Since 2009 the Trust has also opened up an old Guernsey farmhouse at Les Caches Farm which has been faithfully renovated and restored to reflect how the building may have been in around 1800. The building now houses information detailing the restoration process and a selection of museum objects to match the previous usage of the building.

In total the Trust holds a vast range of properties across Guernsey ranging from traditional Guernsey buildings to areas of natural beauty along the island's south coast cliffs. Membership of the Trust is open to all Guernsey residents for an annual fee which grants free entry to other countries National Trusts sites around the world. The National Trust of Guernsey currently as over 2,000 members.
