Naya Shakti Nepal ("New Force") is a political party formed by former Nepali Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, registered to the electoral commission in March 2016.[1][2] It opposes careerism, which it sees as pervasive in modern Nepali politics, and has stated good governance as one of its platform goals.[3] It has held a Clean Kathmandu, Green Kathmandu campaign.[2]

Background

Following the events in September 2015 (after the 2015 Nepal quake and rise of rival CPN-UML headman to PM-elect), long time UCPN-M inner circle member Bhattarai cut ties with Prachanda and took a number of UCPN-M cadres with him.[4] Bhattarai had a fallout with Prachanda years many earlier during the civil war, but they had once again became friends, however, ties again soured in 2015.[citation needed]

Bhattarai, a civil war victor, who had been among the actors, with headman Prachanda, of efforts to oust the royals, was instrumental in bringing the democratic (parliamentary and judicial) system to Nepal.[citation needed] Initially, the duo had been viewed by the Nepali public as war heroes.[citation needed] Their party, now deemed Unified Communist Party of Nepal along with Prachanda, however, failed in its promises to the public[which?][citation needed] and had been accused of gross corruption and being essentially merely new royalty.[citation needed] This led to a gradual weakening of the party, with several groups of members abandoning the party to form their own Communist/Maoist parties, taking along cadres. Nevertheless, these new parties held no parliamentary representation and thus no official power, and have resorted to terrorizing the public or enforcing bandhs with threats to get the attention of the government in Kathmandu.[citation needed] Bhattarai, having had a major political fallout with Prachanda, and not satisfied with existing politics, decided to form his own.
