Despite speculation that incumbent Republican Governor Jim Gibbons would not run for a second term due to his low popularity and scandals, he sought re-election[1][2][3] and was defeated in the Republican primary by former federal judge Brian Sandoval.

Sandoval defeated the Democratic nominee, Rory Reid, son of incumbent Senate Majority Leader Democrat Harry Reid, in the general election.
