Nickelodeon or Nick broadcast in India and neighbouring countries is an Indian children's television network based in Mumbai. It is the Indian equivalent to the American network and is part of Viacom 18. Nick India is available in four languages (English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu).

Background

Nickelodeon India is a television channel devoted to children in India and neighbouring countries. Nick India broadcasts many popular programmes, most notably Motu Patlu and Ninja Hattori-kun. In addition, there are educational shows for toddlers, like Dora the Explorer, that are featured on Nick India's pre-school channel, Nick Jr. Teen-oriented programming is broadcast on Teen Nick. This has been done so that the content can be divided into the appropriate age groups. This is also done so original Nickelodeon shows stay off the regular Nick channel as Viacom 18 does not care about them. When the channel was launched, it aired mostly original programs, like Rugrats, Aaahh! Real Monsters, As Told by Ginger, Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys and other animated shows like The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Rocko's Modern Life, The Angry Beavers, CatDog, Hey Arnold!, The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom. The network also aired live action shows, such as Kenan & Kel, Drake & Josh, Clarissa Explains It All, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Nick Bites and many more. In 2011, the channel went downhill and stopped airing original shows, similar to Disney Channel India.

On 5 December, Viacom 18 launches Nickelodeon HD+ in India. It is in 1080i resolution. It airs HD episodes of their in house shows, as well as new episodes and shows from the Nickelodeon US such as Marvin Marvin and Zack and Quack. However Nick India is very stubborn about broadcasting Nickelodeon US shows and takes them many years to bring a new show to Nick India. Many of the new Nickelodeon shows were never shown in India and they don't seem to pay any attention about it or ignore the shows completely. Because of the high ratings of Ninja Hattori and Motu Patlu, they are only focusing on their own shows and not from Nickelodeon US. Recently SpongeBob no longer airs on Nick India and when they do, they air it during the middle of the night. It is now HD exclusive. It is very surprising that the original Nickelodeon shows are HD exclusive and will never come to Nick SD channel.

Programming

Nickelodeon, or Nick India, broadcasts a lot of cartoon shows that attract children, the most popular being Ninja Hattori. Apart from that, educational shows like Dora the Explorer are also aired in Nick Jr. India. It is very noticeable that most of the shows are not Nickelodeon US shows and even high rated shows like Fairly Odd Parents never came on Nick India.

Viacom 18 recently launched VOOT, a video on demand service. In the VOOT Kids Zone there are several Nickelodeon shows that were never shown on Nick India TV.[1]
