The Dutch version of Nickelodeon, broadcasting in the Netherlands and the Flanders region of Belgium, launched on 14 July 2003.[2][3] In addition to the general Nickelodeon programmes, local productions such as ZOOP, Het Huis Anubis, Het Huis Anubis en de Vijf van het Magische Zwaard and SuperNick are also broadcast. The Dutch Kids' Choice Awards were presented in 2004, 2005 and 2007, featuring nominees that are relevant to Dutch audiences. In 2010 the American Kids' Choice Awards aired, which included categories for the Netherlands and Flanders inserted into the broadcast.

Nickelodeon as aired in Flanders carries generally the same schedule, but with advertising and programming variations for Belgian viewers. All Belgian cable providers carry the Flemish version, with the satellite provider TV Vlaanderen offering only the Dutch version, as it uses the feed of the Dutch CanalDigitaal.

History

Nickelodeon replaced a similar-themed channel, Kindernet in 2003 after the channel was acquired by Viacom by the end of 2001.[4] Nickelodeon started as a program block between 1 PM and 3 PM on Kindernet in the Netherlands in 2002.[5]

In the course of 2003 Nickelodeon is getting a prominent place in the programming of Kindernet. On 14 July 2003 Nickelodeon launched as a 24-hours channel.[6] By then Kindernet was degraded as a program block in the morning and was turned into Nick Jr..[2]

In 2005 Nickelodeon closed as a 24-hours channel. It began time-sharing with a new Dutch television channel Talpa on 1 August 2005. Nickelodeon aired between 6 AM and 6 PM.[7] By the end of 2006 MTV's deal with Talpa ended and Nickelodeon moved to The Box Comedy on 1 December.[8] Nickelodeon extended its airtime till 8 PM and The Box Comedy changed into Comedy Central on 30 April 2007.[9]

Comedy Central switched to TMF on 1 January 2011. As of 14 February 2011 Nickelodeon became a 24-hours channel again.[10] On 21.00 hour Nickelodeon become TeenNick which broadcasts original versions of the series with Dutch subtitles, TeenNick stops on approximately 5.00 AM. After that normal Nickelodeon broadcast again. All content on normal Nickelodeon is Dutch dubbed, except Dutch/Flemish productions.

A high-definition simulcast of Nickelodeon would launch through UPC Netherlands on 3 April 2012. But was delayed due to technical problems.[11] Eventually Nickelodeon HD launched first through KPN Interactive TV on 13 September 2012.[12]

Sister channel Spike launched in the Netherlands on 1 October 2015.[13] At the moment it is broadcasting at night, time-sharing with Nickelodeon.[14]
