French and Greek troops, which had landed in Odessa on 18 december 1918, marched towards Mykolaiv and occupied the city on 31 January 1919. When the Red Army under command of Nikifor Grigoriev approached in March 1919, the allies evacuated the city between 12 and 14 March without a fight.
