PNS Hashmat is the lead ship of her class of submarine for the Pakistan Navy. The Hashmat class is based on the French Navy's Agosta class. Hashmat was originally ordered as SAS Astrant for the South African Navy but was sold to Pakistan—along with planned sister ship Adventurous—when United Nations Security Council Resolution 418 was passed in 1977 preventing the sale to South Africa. As of 16 February 2009[ref], Hashmat was still active with the Pakistan Navy.[2]
