General elections were held in Palau on 6 November 2012. Former President Tommy Remengesau defeated his successor, incumbent Johnson Toribiong, who was first elected in 2008. President Toribiong conceded the election on social media.[1]

Voter registration

15,305 Palauans are registered to vote in the 2012 presidential and general elections, an increase of 1,516 voters from the previous 2008 election.[2]

Presidential and vice presidential election

Primaries

The presidential and vice presidential primary elections were held on September 26, 2012.[3] The top two candidates in the primary qualified for the presidential general election on November 6, 2012. Approximately 12,000 registered voters were eligible to participate.[3]

Presidential primary

Sandra Pierantozzi placed third in the primary.

Three candidates contested the presidential primary: Incumbent President Johnson Toribiong, former President Tommy Remengesau Jr., and former Vice President Sandra Pierantozzi, who served as vice president from 2001 to 2005.[3] Remengesau and Toribiong, who placed first and second respectively in the primary, advanced to the November 6th election.[4]
