Perumukkal (Tamil: பெருமுக்கல்) is a small village in Tindivanam (Tamil: திண்டிவனம்) taluk in Villuppuram (Tamil: விழுப்புரம்) district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The major occupation of the people living at this place is agriculture. In 2011 it had a population of 3000.

Etymology

During the chola period, Perumukkal was known as "perumukkilaana gangai konda nalloor" (Tamil: பெருமுக்கிலான கங்கை கொண்ட நல்லூர்).

Location

Perumukkal is located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) east of Tindivanam, 25 kilometres (16 mi) west of Marakkanam in Tindivanam-Marakkanam road.

About the village

Perumukkal village has 6000 years old heritage. The historical importance of the village is the presence of 4000 B.C.E. Petroglyph, 7th century Mukthialeeswarar Temple, ruined Kamatchiamman temple and a Dargah.

Petroglyph

On the top of the hill, petroglyphs are found in a cave namely, Sita Cave. Local people believe Sita lived in this cave. This is the only petroglyph found in Tamil Nadu and also it is one among the four in India. These petroglyphs are similar to the Egyptian Hieroglyphics letters and hence it is dated to 4000 B.C. But some researchers dated to megalithic.

Perumukkal Fort

It is a small fort on a hill, about 437 feet above the sea level. In 1961 it was captured by Sir Eyre Coote. In 1780 was captured by Haider, and taken by him in 1782, regained by the English in 17983. In 1790 it was taken by Tippu. Only a few ruins remain, to indicate the position of the fort.

Mukthialeeswarar Temple

Perumukkal Hillock

This temple is located atop of the perumukkal hillock. which had originally been built in brick, was converted into a stone temple during the period of Vikrama Chola (1118-35 CE). The deity of the temple is known as Tiruvanmikai Eswaramudayar as well as Perumukkal Udayar in Tamil (பெருமுக்கல் உடையார்) and Mukthiyaleeswarar in Sanskrit.The donations made by the Chola, Pandya, Sambuvaraya, Vijayanagara rulers have been recorded in more than 60 inscriptions found on the temple walls and vatteluthu inscription dating back to 7th century C.E.
