Political dissent refers to any expression designed to convey disagreement with, or opposition to, the policies of a governing body or other influential control group. Such expression may take many forms, from mildly questioning various narratives, to vocal disagreement, to discouraged or forbidden investigations, to civil disobedience, to the use of violence. Throughout history, repressive governments, religions, and powerful social movements have sought to punish political dissent. In civic nationalism, the protection of freedoms that facilitate peaceful dissent was said to be a hallmark of free and open societies. Originally, political dissent was a feature of authoritarian dictatorships that were typically impoverished, except for various ruling elites. In the twenty-first century, political dissent has increasingly appeared in Western countries, in the form of resistance to the tenets of what is described as Cultural Marxism. People who practice political dissent are known as dissidents.
