Pollachi is a town and a taluk headquarters in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu state, India. Located about 40 km to the south of Coimbatore, it is the second largest town in the district after Coimbatore. Pollachi is a very popular Marketplace, with large markets for jaggery and vegetables and is considered to be South India's biggest Cattle market.[2][3] As of 2011, the town had a population of 90,180.

History

Pollachi was known as 'Pozhil Vaitchi' as well as "Porul aatchi(பொருள் ஆட்சி)" roughly meaning "Ruled by wealth" in Tamil. The name Porul aatchi changed to Pollachi over time. It was also known as Mudi Konda Chola Nallur during the period of the Cholas. Pollachi's market was famous due to earlier sale of elephant [4]

Geography

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Pollachi had a population of 90,180 with a sex-ratio of 1,012 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929.[6] A total of 7,732 were under the age of six, constituting 3,952 males and 3,780 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 10.57% and 0.29% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the city was 82.15%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.[6] The city had a total of 24,755 households. There were a total of 36,972 workers, comprising 219 cultivators, 488 main agricultural labourers, 1,018 in household industries, 32,720 other workers, 2,527 marginal workers, 25 marginal cultivators, 45 marginal agricultural labourers, 124 marginal workers in household industries and 2,333 other marginal workers.[1]

Politics

The Pollachi assembly constituency is part of Pollachi (Lok Sabha constituency).[7] Pollachi, Udumalpet, Valparai, Kinathukadavu, Madathukulam and Thondamuthur form the Pollachi parliamentary constituency.

Economy

The economy of the town is predominantly dependent on agriculture. Coconut, jaggery, vegetables and cattle contribute greatly to the agricultural output. Pollachi is also a popular movie shooting location for the Tamil film industry; it is preferred for outdoor shooting because of its scenic landscape. Pollachi is also called 'Mini Kodambakkam' because of frequent movie shootings.

Transport

Road

Pollachi is linked by National Highway 209, State Highway 19, SH 78 and SH 78A. The central bus stand caters for bus transport which is used by Government-run TNSTC and private operators. A new bus stand has been constructed opposite the old bus stand replacing the latter. TNSTC-Coimbatore is the major operator which operates city and inter city buses services from Pollachi. It has three branches Pollachi-1,2 and 3 in Pollachi. State Express Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu) operates long distance buses from Pollachi to Chennai, Bangalore, Trivandrum, Tiruchendur, Sencottah, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari etc., It also has an online reservation center functioning at Pollachi Bus stand.

Rail

Pollachi Railway Junction connects with Palakkad Junction to the west, Podanur and Coimbatore Junctions to the north and Dindigul Junction to the east. Gauge conversion was effected recently, starting its service from January 9, 2015 for the Pollachi Jn - Dindigul Jn section. The Pollachi section was added to the Palakkad Railway Division from 2007.[8] Palani to Pollachi train services began from January 2015.[9] With the new broad gauge conversion, Pollachi is now connected with Chennai, Madurai, Palani, Tiruchendur, Tirunelveli and Palakkad through trains. Pollachi to Podanur broad gauge conversion is in progress.

Air

Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest airport, located about 48 km from Pollachi town. International flights are operated to Singapore and Sharjah. Routine domestic flights are operated to all the major cities in India.

Places of interest

Azhiyar Dam

The Azhiyar Dam is located on the foothills of Anamalai in the Western Ghats. Monkey falls deriving its name due to the abundance of monkeys found in the region is located close to the dam. Vethathiri Maharishi Yoga and Kaya Kalpa Research Foundation founded by Vethathiri Maharishi is located near Azhiyar.

Valparai

Valparai is about 65 km from Pollachi and is situated at an altitude of 3500 feet above the sea level. Valparai can be reached via Azhiyar through a hilly road with 40 hair pin bends.Solaiyar Dam is 15 km from Valparai town after Mudis and is one of the largest rock dams in India. The length of the reservoir it impounds is about 20 km.

Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary

Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at an average altitude of 1,400 meters in the Western Ghats near Pollachi. The area of the sanctuary is 958 km².

Topslip

Topslip is a point located at an altitude of about 800 feet in the Anamalai mountain range. It is about 37 km from Pollachi, and this small town serves as an ideal picnic spot with its wooden log houses and safaris. Chinnakallar is renowned for receiving the highest rainfall in Tamil Nadu.[10]

Parambikulam Dam and National Park

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the valley between the Anaimalai Hills of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathi range of Kerala. The Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Kerala state. The area is hilly and rocky, drained by several rivers, including Parambikulam, Sholayar and Thekkady. It is thickly forested with bamboo, sandalwood, rosewood and teak, the sanctuary has some marshy land and scattered patches of grassland. Kannimara, one of the oldest and largest teak trees, is another attraction in the sanctuary. It had a girth of 6.52 metres, height of 48.25 metres when the measurement was taken in 2003.[11][12] Parambikulam Aliya multipurpose project involves a series of dams interconnected by tunnels and canals at various elevations to harness the Parambikulam, Aliyar, Nirar, Sholiyar, Thunkadavu, Thenkkadi and Palar rivers, laid for irrigation and power generation.

Sholayar Dam

Sholayar Dam being one of the largest Dams in Asia is about 30 km far from Valparai.

Thirumurthy Hills

Thirumurthyswami temple is a temple dedicated to Ammalingeswarar, situated in the foothills of the Thirumurthy Hills. There is a stream and a waterfall close to the temple.
