Welcome!
A warm welcome to the Lüneburg Heath Portal, the home of Wikipedia information
on the Lüneburg Heath, an important natural landscape and tourist destination in North Germany.

The portal gives a brief overview of the region as well as acting as a road map for many of the articles about the Lüneburg Heath in English Wikipedia.

The Lüneburg Heath is a large area of heathland, geest and forest in the north German state of Lower Saxony within a triangle formed by the cities of Hanover, Bremen and Hamburg. Much of it coincides with the historical Principality of Lüneburg. Today, most of the area is now protected by nature parks and nature reserves, the biggest being the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, the Nordheide and Südheide. Northern Low Saxon is still widely spoken.

The region's extensive areas of heathland are typical of those that covered most of the North German countryside until about 1800, but which have almost completely disappeared elsewhere. The heaths were formed after the New Stone Age by the overgrazing of forests on the poor sandy soils known as geest. The Lüneburg Heath is therefore a historic cultural landscape. The heath is kept clear mainly through grazing a North German breed of moorland sheep called the Heidschnucke. Its unique landscape makes the Lüneburg Heath a popular tourist destination. More...

It started in 1983 from the instructional collection at the Panzertruppenschule, the Bundeswehr ("German Army") school for training officers and NCO's of German armoured units. It is now a museum open to the public, jointly run by the town of Munster and the Panzertruppenschule.

The site covers 9,000 m² including 7,500 m² of exhibition halls. In 2003 a new building was opened for various special displays, a museum shop and a cafeteria. More...
