Prince Louis of Luxembourg (given names: Louis Xavier Marie Guillaume; born 3 August 1986) is the third son of the Grand Duke Henri and the Cuban-born Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg (née María Teresa Mestre y Batista-Falla). Aside from Prince of Luxembourg, he also uses Prince of Nassau as a title of pretense (Nassau was annexed by Prussia in 1866 and its territory has been part of republican Germany since 1919). His godparents are Xavier Sanz and Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein.

Prince Louis has two elder siblings: Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg and Prince Félix of Luxembourg; and two younger siblings: Princess Alexandra and Prince Sébastien of Luxembourg. He is married to Tessy Antony, a former NCO in the Luxembourg Army. They have two sons, Gabriel and Noah.

Education

After his primary school education in Lorentzweiler, Prince Louis went on to study at the American School of Luxembourg. He then left for Switzerland, where he continued his secondary education at the Collège Beau Soleil and graduated in June 2005.

Prince Louis speaks Luxembourgish, French, English and German fluently. He also has a sound knowledge of Spanish.

During his time in Switzerland, he developed a particular interest in social and humanitarian work. He has taken part in missions organised by an NGO, in cooperation with his school, in Mumbai, India. There, he taught English to children from the poorest neighbourhoods of the city and to children living on the street. After his return to Europe, he followed what seems to have become a calling and carried out a one-year traineeship at the headquarters of the Red Cross in Geneva. During his school holidays, he also participated in programmes for looking after groups of children and supporting the elderly.

After spending two years in the United States, where Prince Louis underwent training in "Aeronautics and Aeronautical Management" and gained his "Private pilot certificate", the princely family moved to England. There, Prince Louis and Princess Tessy attended university. In May 2014, Prince Louis graduated from Richmond, the American International University in London with a BA in Art in Communications. Prince Louis wrote his undergraduate dissertation on humanitarian advertisement. Prince Louis currently works in the field of social corporate responsibilities.

Marriage and family

Prince Louis married Tessy Antony on 29 September 2006 in Gilsdorf's Roman Catholic parish church. Upon his initially morganatic marriage,[1] the prince gave up his succession rights and those of all the couple's children, although Louis retains his title of Prince of Luxembourg and the style of Royal Highness while Tessy and Gabriel were originally given the surname de Nassau with no titles.[2]

On Luxembourg's National Day on 23 June 2009, Grand Duke Henri gave Tessy the title of Princess of Luxembourg with the style Her Royal Highness and the title Prince of Nassau and style Royal Highness to their sons and future children.[3] The family lives in London.[4]

Gabriel

On 12 March 2006, Tessy Antony gave birth out of wedlock to a boy, christened Gabriel Michael Louis Ronny de Nassau,[5] who was born at a private Swiss hospital, Clinic des Grangettes, in Geneva.[6] The baby is the first grandchild for Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. The baby's godparents were his paternal aunt Princess Alexandra and maternal uncle Ronny Antony.

He was given the title and style of His Royal Highness, Prince of Nassau by his grandfather on 23 June 2009.[3]

Noah

The couple's second son, Noah Etienne Guillaume Gabriel Matthias Xavier de Nassau, was born on 21 September 2007 at the Maternité Grande-Duchesse Charlotte.[7] The second grandchild for Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, the baby was baptised at the same church in Gilsdorf where his parents married and his elder brother was christened. His godparents are his paternal uncle, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, and his maternal aunt Patty Antony.

He was given the title and style of His Royal Highness, Prince of Nassau by his grandfather on 23 June 2009.[3]

Patronage

Dedicated to upholding certain values, such as those promoted through sport, Prince Louis accepted the High Patronage of the Fédération luxembourgeoise de Tennis de Table (Luxembourg Table Tennis Federation) (2004), the Fédération des Arts Martiaux (Luxembourg Martial Arts Federation) (2010) and the Fédération Aéronautique Luxembourgeoise (Luxembourg Aeronautical Federation) (2011).

Hobbies

Prince Louis is a keen fan of numerous sports, most of which he also practices avidly. He has a passion for mountain sports (alpine skiing, snowboarding, climbing...), as well as cycling, hunting and scuba diving, which he shares with his wife, Princess Tessy.
