Princess Margarita was born on 18 April 1905 on the island of Corfu in Greece.[1] She was the sister of Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, the consort of Elizabeth II.[1] She also had three sisters: Theodora, Margravine of Baden; Cecilie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine; and Sophie, later Princess George of Hanover.

Marriage and children

Margarita married Prince Gottfried of Hohenlohe-Langenburg on 20 April 1931 in Langenburg, Germany.[1] Gottfried was a son of Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria through her second son, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and his wife, Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia, a daughter of Alexander II of Russia. In descent from Queen Victoria, Prince Gottfried was a second cousin once removed of Princess Margarita and in descent from Nicholas I, they were third cousins.

Gottfried succeeded his father as Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg on 11 December 1950.

Six children were born of their marriage, all of whom were styled as His/Her Serene Highness:[1]

  • Stillborn daughter (born and died 3 December 1933)
  • Prince Kraft Alexander Ernst Ludwig Georg Emich (25 June 1935 - 16 March 2004); succeeded his father as Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg
  • Princess Beatrix Alice Marie Melita Margarete of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (10 June 1936 - 15 November 1997)
  • Prince Georg Andreas Heinrich of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (born 24 November 1938)
  • Prince Rupprecht Sigismund Philipp Ernst of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (7 April 1944 - 8 April 1978)
  • Prince Albrecht Wolfgang Christoph of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (7 April 1944 - 23 April 1992)

Their four elder children were all born at Schwäbisch Hall, while the two youngest boys, twins, were born in Langenburg.[1]

Death

Princess Margarita died on 24 April 1981 in Langenburg, Germany.[1] She survived her husband by 21 years.
