Raebareli <phonos file="Raebareli.ogg">pronunciation</phonos> is a city and a municipal board in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Raebareli District. The town is situated at the bank of the Sai river, 82 km (51 mi), 82 km southeast of Lucknow. It possesses many architectural features, chief of which is a strong and spacious fort erected .

Etymology and post independence

The prefix Rae represents Rai the common title of the Kayasths, who were masters of the town for a considerable period of time. At the beginning of the 13th century, Raebareli was ruled by the Bhars who were displaced by the Kayasths. During the rule of the Delhi sultans, nearly the whole region formed a part of their kingdom.

The story behind the name Raebareli is that, before independence, the British used to visit "Paltan Bagh", a place on the outskirts of the district, to visit a Kayasth family whose head was Kali Sahay Saheb. As he was close to the British, the name "Rae" to the Raebareli. This Rae is taken from the word Raes in Siddhaur district Barabanki which is the birthplace of Kali Sahay Saheb.

Raja Har Parshad "Taluqedar of Naseerabad" a Kayasth, a native of this town, was the Nazim or Commissioner of Khairabad Division during the reign of the ex-king. He joined the mutineers and went up to Naipal with Begum Hazrat Mahal of Oudh dynasty and on 31 December 1858 while returning after leaving her safe, he was killed in a battle with British army. He has been honoured with the title of "Lastville and the most notorious governor of Oudh". The district of Rae Bareli was created by the British in 1858, and is named after its headquarters town.[1]

The city and the district became famous as a political bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi Nationalist family. After independence, Rae Bareli constituency was won by Jawaharlal Nehru's son-in-law Feroze Gandhi. After Feroze Gandhi's death in 1960, the constituency was won in 1967 by his wife Indira Gandhi (daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru), who went on to become the first woman Prime Minister of India.

Geography and climate

Rae Bareli lies in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh. On the North it is bounded by tehsil Mohanlal Ganj of Lucknow and Haider Gargh of Barabanki, on the east by tehsil Mussafir Khana of district Sultanpur and on the south-east by Pargana Ateha and the Kunda tehsil of district Pratapgarh. The southern boundary is formed by Ganga which separates it from the district of Fatehpur. On the west lies the Purwa tehsil of Unnao.
