Reseda High School, established in 1955, is located in the Reseda section of the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California, USA.

The school is home to the Reseda High School Police Academy Magnet, the Reseda High School Science Magnet and the Reseda High School Law & Public Service Magnet. Reseda High School's program consists of four small learning communities (SLC), the 9th Grade Academy, 10th Grade Academy, Academy of Technology & Health Careers, and the Liberal Arts & Education Academy.

History

Reseda High was the first complete high school to be built after World War II.[citation needed] Reseda opened with complete academic and science buildings, gymnasium, track & field, Industrial shops, including an automotive repair facility. Reseda was the first High School to have a three-color system of navy, Columbia blue, and white.[citation needed] It is one of few high schools in the San Fernando Valley to have a complete auditorium.

Academic programs

Reseda High School programs include a Humanities Academy, Multilingual Teachers Academy, Academic Decathlon program, Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Chapter of Health Occupations Students of America, Science Bowl.

Reseda High School is one of the few schools in the San Fernando Valley to have a robotics team.[1]

Sports

Reseda High School fields teams for boys & girls in football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, golf, track & field, cross country, water polo, swimming & wrestling. The teams have won CIF Championships in sports including football, basketball, track & field, soccer, volleyball, cross country and tennis. The school has had several successful individual athletes.

Reseda has marching band, cheerleading and dance & drill teams.

Football

The Reseda High School football team won league championships in 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1993, 2010 and 2011 seasons for three different leagues. The Regents were 2-A CIF champions in 1986 and 3-A champions in 1995.

Reseda's football field is dedicated to former head coach Joel Shaeffer, who died in early January 2013. Schaeffer coached the Regents from 1976 to 2000, in which the team won 6 league titles and 2 CIF championships.[2] The team's current Head Coach, Alonso Arreola took over the team in the 2005 season and won consecutive league Championship titles in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Reseda High School Police Academy Magnet

Reseda High School’s Award-winning Police Academy Magnet (PAM) began in the fall of 1998 and is one of four PAM high schools and two PAM middle schools in the LAUSD. The Police Academy Magnet program was founded by then football coach, Joel Schaeffer.

Reseda High’s award-winning career pathway program is a partnership between the LAPD and LAUSD, designed to educate students about law enforcement through a rigid course of study involving intense physical training and compulsory community service. An LAPD Officer is assigned a full-time position at the site to teach, counsel and mentor the students through their police academy experience.

Becoming a part of Reseda High School’s Police Academy Magnet is a major decision requiring the dedication of the student first and foremost. [3]

Reseda’s PAM has received proclamations from the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Police Commission, Councilman Bob Blummenfield, Councilman Tom LaBonge, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and Magnet Schools of America. A California Partnership Academy and a model for law enforcement programs around the country.

The color guard unit has performed for numerous public events for the city of Los Angeles including: Police Chief Charlie Beck, LAPD’s Youth Summit, The Reseda Chamber of Commerce, and many LAPAMS events.

Bench Press Champions 2014

The “Toughest Cadet Alive” competition squad has won the “Toughest Team Alive Competitions” in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, & 2013.

The PAM graduation rate went up to 100% in 2006- 2010, 2012 and 2013 not dropping below 95%

Reseda High School’s Police Academy Magnet has consistently graduated the most seniors with at least 95% of those graduates going on to college. [4]

Reseda High School Science Magnet

The Reseda Science Magnet School attempts to provide students with a strong background in science, math and social responsibility. The program prepares students to be successful at the college level in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, engineering, geology and environmental science. Students are expected to have a strong background in mathematics.

Students are offered three choices: a medical option, an engineering option, and a geology/ environmental science option though a majority of the students choose the medical option.

The Reseda Science Magnet scores the highest on CSTs, SATs, and ACTs in the entire school.

Naval Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps.

Reseda High School's NJROTC Program is ranked top JROTC unit in the San Fernando Valley.[citation needed] The unit has placed top 5 in state meets and qualified for the National meet in Pensacola, Florida twice in its 12-year history.[citation needed] They have won the NJROTC Distinguished Unit Award for six years running. In the following year of 2009-2010 the Units Air Rifle Team placed 1st in the California State Championships and competed in the NJROTC National Championships in Port Clinton, Ohio and the CMP Three Position Rifle Junior Olympics in Anniston, Alabama, where team commander Sasha Barnett earned a Bronze and Silver medal.
