Major-General Robert Cawthome (Urdu: رابرٹ کاتھوم) was an Australian-born British Army general officer, later serving in the Pakistan Army. He served as Major General in the newly formed Army, and became the Deputy Chief of Staff.[1] He would later also become a founding officer and Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from 1950 to 1959.[2][3]
Inter-Services Intelligence
Cawthome is regarded as the founder of the Inter-Services Intelligence.[1][4][5][6][7] According to The Australian, "The ISI dates back to 1948 when it was established as the brainchild of [the] Australian-born British Army officer, Major General R. Cawthome...".[8] At the end of December 1952, Major-General Cawthome, Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), sent a priority report to Commander Syed Mohammad Ahsan (Pakistan Navy), and asked for a detailed reaction from Pakistan Armed Forces personnel on the basic principles of the ISI. Cawthome remains the longest-serving director general of the ISI, serving in the position from 1950 to 1959.[8]
