Roberto Gualtieri (born in Rome, 19/07/1966), member of the European Parliament since 2009, he was elected Chair of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) on July 2014.[1] He graduated in literature and philosophy (1992) and has a research doctorate (PhD) in contemporary history (1997). Since 1995, he has been author of several books and articles on Italian and international history of the 20th century and on the history of the European integration. Mr. Gualtieri is an associate professor of contemporary history at 'La Sapienza' University, Rome.[2]
Political and academic activity
Since 2001, he has been Deputy Director of the Gramsci Institute Foundation.[3] In 2006, he has been among the founders of the Partito democratico (Congress of Orvieto, October 2006) and he has been among the "wise men" who wrote its Manifesto.[4] In 2007 he has been elected to the National Assembly of the party and since 2008 he is member of its National board, where he has been confirmed in 2014.[5] From 2008 to 2011 he has been director (with José Luis Rhi-Sausi) of the "Annual Report on European Integration" (published by Il Mulino).[6] Since 2009, he is member of the editorial committee of the Foundation "Italianieuropei" . Since 2013, he is member of the Spinelli Group in the European Parliament,[7] and he has been among the authors of the "Fundamental Law of the European Union" (with Elmar Brok, Guy Verhofstaft, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Andrew Duff e Jo Leinen), published by Bertelsmann Stiftung.
Parliamentary activity
In 2009, he has been appointed S&D Group coordinator for the Security and Defence Subcommittee (SEDE) and standing rapporteur for the CSFP Budget in the Budgets Committee (BUDG). He has been also full member of the Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO) and substitute of the Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET).[8] In 2010, he has been appointed S&D Group negotiator within the EP negotiating team (with Elmar Brok and Guy Verhofstadt) on the creation of the European External Action Service.[9] In December 2011, he has been member of the European Parliament negotiating team (with Elmar Brok, Guy Verhofstadt and Daniel Cohn-Bendit) for the establishment of the "Fiscal Compact".[10] In October 2012, he has been designated "sherpa" negotiator for the European Parliament (with Elmar Brok, Guy Verhofstadt and Daniel Cohn-Bendit) in the working group set up by Hermann Van Rompuy on a Genuine Economic and Monetary Union.[11]
In 2013 he was co-rapporteur of the Report on constitutional problems of a multitier governance in the European Union with Trzaskowski .[12] In 2013, participated in the elaboration of the new Treaty for the European Union, with Brok, Verhofstaft, Cohn-Bendit, Andrew Duff and Jo Leinen, promoted by the "Spinelli Group", of which he is a member.[13]
Following his re-election as an MEP, in July 2014 he was elected Chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.[14]
