Established in 2005, Sacred Heart Apostolic School (SHAS) is a private Roman Catholic boarding school for boys in grades seven through twelve who are considering a vocation to the priesthood, also known as a minor seminary.[1] It is located within the Diocese of Gary and sponsored by the Legionaries of Christ, a religious congregation of the Roman Catholic Church. The school is in the north-central Indiana town of Rolling Prairie. It serves approximately 35-50 students.
History
The main building of the 51 acre campus was built in 1932-33 by the Congregation of Holy Cross. It was constructed as their novitiate dedicated to St. Joseph. In 1968, they changed its use to an international boarding school called LeMans Academy. LeMans closed in 2003, and the property was divided before the Legion bought the main building in 2005.[2]
Academics
The school features small class sizes. The students study in Latin, Biblical Greek, and Religion in addition to ordinary high school subjects of Science, English, Social Studies, and Math. All students take part in a school band.[1]
Spirituality
The students have daily rosary, medition, and adoration.[1] They are trained according to the great masters of the Christian tradition and according to the Spirituality of the Legionaries of Christ.
Since the school is for boys discerning if they are called to the priesthood and religious life in the Legion, the commitments of such a life make a part of the spiritual formation the school offers.
In 2011, the Junior class went on a humanitarian mission to Mexico.[3]
The Apostolic school also runs as a retreat center for the Conquest groups. Many functions also take place such as retreats and Easter games, held during Holy Week. Visiting boys participate in a weekend or week of talks, prayers, sports, daily Mass and Adoration.
The school also hosts a month-long summer program in which boys who have expressed interest in becoming a priest participate in school and related activities.
