Saint Paul College is a community and technical college located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. It was founded in 1910 and has about 10,000 full-time and part-time students. Its motto is "Start Here…Go Anywhere".
Saint Paul College is one of the fastest-growing, most diverse two-year public colleges, recently reaccredited by the Academic Quality Improvement Program of the Higher Learning Commission through 2019. They foster a culture of inclusiveness, collaboration and alliances with community partners, businesses, industries and universities to provide an extraordinary education for all Minnesotans. The College offers 39 associate degree programs, including the Associate in Arts degree, and 60 career certificate and diploma programs.
The College is located near the heart of St. Paul, Minnesota, adjacent to the Cathedral of Saint Paul and across from the Minnesota History Center.
History
Saint Paul College began as a "Boy's Vocational School" in 1910 and served young men interested in working in the building trades. Later, "Girl's Vocational School" opened to train young women for health careers. Shortly after World War II, a veteran's program was developed for returning servicemen. Learning took place in area high schools and other St. Paul locations until 1966 when faculty and staff moved into its current facility—a 523,000-square-foot (48,600 m2) complex located on a 30-acre (120,000 m2) site. This site became Saint Paul Technical Vocational Institute, or Saint Paul TVI. In 2002 the college implemented a name change to Saint Paul College - A Community & Technical College. A new focus on liberal arts education was added to accompany the school's traditional vocational training.
Programs & Degrees
Major programs include AA Degree, advanced manufacturing technology, American Sign Language interpreter and transliterator, business, computer graphics and programming, construction and building, culinary arts, entrepreneurship, global trade, health information technology, Liberal arts & sciences, medical laboratory technology, personal trainer, photography entrepreneur, practical nursing, respiratory care, sheet metal, transportation technologies, and union trades (plumbing & ironworking).[1]
Saint Paul College also offers online and Weekend College options.
Highlights
In 2010 Saint Paul College was ranked the No.1 community college in the nation by Washington Monthly magazine for student engagement in active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, and support for learning.[2] The college maintained this ranking in 2013, once again being named the No.1 community college in the nation by Washington Monthly magazine.[3]
Saint Paul College has transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities to provide pathways for students to transfer and continue their higher education. The college also works with more than 500 business, industry and labor representatives to provide employment opportunities for graduates.
The College is also a part of the Power of YOU scholarship program, which provides qualified students graduating from Minneapolis or Saint Paul public schools the opportunity to attend Saint Paul College tuition-free.[4]
