Salvadorean hip hop (also known as "Guanaco rap/hip hop) is hip hop and rap music that comes from El Salvador. It is a relatively new style of music, when groups like Pescozada and Mecate formed in the late 1990s, its counter part is Guanarock for Salvadoran rock groups. Guanaco is a nickname that Salvadorans give themselves which means "brother", it comes from the word Guanacasco which means "gathering brotherhood" from the indigenous language Poton Lenca, from northern and eastern El Salvador.[citation needed]
