Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) is an enginneering college located in Mumbai, India. It is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and offers undergraduate (Bachelor) and graduate (Master) degrees in engineering.[1]

SPCE is one of the few Mumbai University affiliated colleges that have received Grade ’A’ rating from the Government of Maharashtra.

SPCE is supported by government funds, and was granted autonomous status by the UGC in June 2010.[2]

Ratan Tata Trust Scholarship, Scholarship Under - Minority Scheme (ST), Social Welfare Scholarship are some financial awards in SPCE given to students based on merit.[3]

History

Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) under the management of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, was founded by Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi as a Government Aided Engineering College. It was established to meet the growing demand for engineering talent.

The foundation stone of the college was laid on 17th September 1961 by Shri. Y. B. Chavan (the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra who later became the Defence Minister of India.)

The college was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962.The college is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an eminent nation builder of independent India.

It was started with three conventional courses. viz., Civil, Electrical and Mechanical with an intake of 40 in each branch which was subsequently increased to 60. At the time, it was only the fifth engineering institute in the Bombay region after VJTI, UDCT, IIT Bombay and M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering. The next stage in development aimed at raising the level of the institute to Post Graduate by starting Post Graduate Course in Civil and Mechanical. The institute introduced first P. G. course namely M.E. (Civil) with Structural Engineering Subjects in the year 1988 with the aid from Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. Subsequently Post Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering disciplines was also introduced.

The college is autonomous and affiliated to the University of Mumbai for the full-time degree, post graduate, and research programs. The institute has set high standards for aspiring engineering students and also meets the need of quality education in the challenging world of business. The institute is a recognised PhD and QIP center and it is one of the TEQIP- II institutes.

The University of Mumbai recognised the college as two separate institutions - SPCE (Aided) offering Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering courses and SPCE (Unaided) offering Computer Engineering, Electronics & Information Technology courses. The university desired that these self-financed courses be separated and housed in a separate building and developed as a separate self-financed entity. Thus, in 2005-06 the unaided wing was formally separated from its parent college and established as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT).[4][5][6]

Over the last 50 years the college has gained an excellent reputation in the field of Technical Education. SPCE is one of the few colleges that have received Grade ‘A+’ rating for its aided courses from the Govt. of Maharashtra which certifies the spirit of excellence that the institute has symbolized and always practiced. Institute celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2012.

Students of Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE), Mumbai, won 2014 CIO’s Challenge organised by Cognizant Technology Solutions.[7]

Location

The college is located at Munshi Nagar, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan's Campus, Andheri (West), Mumbai. It is surrounded by skyscrapers, housing head offices of international firms.

The campus has a tennis court, a sports field, a bank extension, a post office, a lake and a botanical garden. A few government undertakings have their facilities here.

Vision

The founding vision was stated as "To build a renowned institution which will produce skilled graduate engineers with goodwill for humanity."

College Magazine

The first magazine of the Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) was titled Sukarma.

Today SPCE has an annual college magazine named Disha (meaning direction). It includes reports on the activities that have taken place in SPCE throughout the year, as well as articles and photographs. A newsletter named Communication Times is also run by the IETE committee.

The college also has student chapters of IEEE[12] and IETE.[13]

College Festivals

SPCE hosts its annual cultural festival named SPACE[14] in February. It usually goes on for 3 days, and is heavily participated in by college students from across the city of Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra. It culminates in a live-wire performance by some of the most popular music bands/singers of the country and even abroad. It remains a little-known fact that the name "SPACE", was originally "SPΔCE" with the Greek symbol Δ (delta) in between the letters P and C. However, with time, the Δ (delta) was misinterpreted as the letter A, and thus the name SPACE was carried on ever since. Apart from SPACE, the colleges also organise technical events like "Spectra"[15] in January every year, where all the activities are carried out by year drop students. The sports' committee of the college organises an annual State Level Sports Festival "SPIRIT" [16] where teams from all over Mumbai and Maharashtra participate in games in Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Basketball and other indoor games.

Hostel Facility

A few students who take admission to SPCE come from outside Mumbai and they can avail the hostel facility. The institute is presently trying to cope with the need to accommodate the increasing number of female students. Availability of accommodation is severe problem near campus arena due to high class society.

The hostel intake is currently about 36 students per branch. Around 350 students stay at the SPCE Boy's Hostel.
