The next Scottish local elections will take place in 2017, on Thursday 4 May. They will be for all 32 local authorities (see Local government in Scotland).

The last election was in 2012, normally these elections take place every four years, but this has been postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the next Scottish Parliament election, due to take place in 2016.

Once again the local elections will be counted electronically using the same system used in 2012. The tender was awarded to CGI (formerly Logica) and Idox Elections (formerly Opt2vote) both of which delivered the 2012 elections successfully.
