A Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Crystal Mover on the East Loop

The Sengkang LRT Line is a 10.7 km light rail line which partly opened on 18 January 2003. It is the second LRT system in Singapore and is fully automated. The line uses the Crystal Mover rolling stock supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This line connects the residential districts and suburbs of Sengkang to the Sengkang Town Centre, which is also served by the North East Line and the Sengkang Bus Interchange.

History

Plans for the Sengkang LRT Line was underway when the Bukit Panjang LRT is opened by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in 6 November 1999, including the construction of two loops. Construction began in January 2000 for both the East Loop and West Loop.

15 November 2007 Farmway opened for passenger service.
4 January 2010 West Loop operated in both directions during the morning and evening peak hours on weekdays.
1 January 2013 West Loop operated in both directions throughout the day and Cheng Lim was opened for passenger service.[1]
27 June 2015 Kupang opened for passenger service.[2]

Improvements

On 31 October 2012, LTA announced that from 1Q 2016, Sengkang and Punggol LRT systems will be upgraded to a two-car system for the 41 existing train cars, allowing double the number of passengers to board at any one time. Each train car can take up to 105 passengers. 16 more train-cars will also be procured. This will bring the total fleet size to 57 train-cars. Hence, there is also the need to modify the signalling and communication system.[3]

On 22 December 2015, the line has started operating two-car trains, five years after plans to raise the capacity of the increasingly packed light-rail system were revealed. This boosts capacity to 204 per trip as compared to 105 in a single car configuration.[4]

Rolling Stock

Trains operating on the line are Mitsubishi Crystal Movers (C810) manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. These trains operates from the Sengkang Depot which serves maintenance and train overhaul facilities for trains along the Sengkang and Punggol LRT lines.
