Sharma (Devanagari: शर्मा śarmā) is a common surname among Brahmins in India and Nepal. The Sanskrit stem śarman- (nom. śarmā) can mean 'joy', 'comfort', 'happiness'.[1]

An alternative English spelling of the name used in the city of Varanasi and the Indian states of Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala is "Sarma". Some Assamese people also use Sarmah.[2]

It is regarded as a highly prestigious name and as such has been adopted in recent times in various non-Brahman communities. According to Indian sociologist, S. Devadas Pillai "The suffix Sharma indicates that the chanter is a Brahman..."[3]
