Shiv Nadar University (SNU) is a private interdisciplinary university situated in the Dadri village of Uttar Pradesh in India. It was founded in 2011 and is part of a series of initiatives launched by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, a private foundation funded by Shiv Nadar, founder and chairman of HCL Enterprise.[2][3][4] Its stated aim is "to create an enduring, research-led, inter-disciplinary university."[5]

Shiv Nadar University was established by the Act no. 12 of 2011 of State Legislature of Uttar Pradesh as a State Private University, and was empowered by the UGC to award degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956. The University started the Engineering Majors in the Academic Year 2011-12 with the approval of the AICTE. The University is currently registered with DSIR, Government of India as a Research Institution.

History

In 1994, Nadar established Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) and created its first initiative in Chennai, the SSN Institutions, which soon became a top ranked engineering college. The Foundation was a significant driver of social change and education through institutions spanning the education spectrum from schools to colleges. The SNF decided to build a unique research-led interdisciplinary university that can be identified as India's first Ivy League institution. In the early 2010s a 286-acre land plot near the town of Dadri was earmarked for building the campus. The university started with an undergraduate curriculum that was unique and unprecedented in India. The curriculum was designed to allow students to major in a particular subject while also studying and experimenting with a range of other minor and elective subjects and getting degrees with minors/ specialisations.

Academic organisation

Curriculum approach

Each is anchored in Core Common Curriculum (CCC) – a set of courses aimed to expose students to essential practice and knowledge from eight different categories.

Research

From 2011 to 2015, the University received Extramural Grants of over ₹10 crores for more than 30 active research projects, many of which are in collaboration with leading international universities. Researchers include faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, Ph.D. scholars, visiting scholars and undergraduate students.

Research centers are part of the schools, to encourage collaboration amongst the research and coursework areas and to provide opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects. Several on-campus research opportunities are provided to meritorious undergraduate students under the guidance of professors and teaching assistants. SNU hosts the following research centers:

Schools

  • School of Engineering (SoE): At SOE, students are trained through a carefully customized curriculum, developed in consultation with industry and academia. The collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University keeps it connected with global trends. The school has five departments: Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. It offers B.Tech. and Doctoral Programs in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
  • School of Natural Sciences (SoNS): At SoNS, individual disciplines are taught in depth to encourage cross-disciplinary thinking. The school has four departments: Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, and Mathematics. It offers B.Sc. (Research) programs in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, along with Masters' in Mathematics and Data Analytics, and PG Diplomas in Business and Data Analytics. Doctoral Programs are offered in Physics, Life Sciences and Bioinformatics.
  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SoHSS): At SoHSS, research, teaching and creative activities go hand in hand to enable students to become engaged, critical thinkers.
