Sings the Music of Bacharach & Kaempfert is the 34th original studio album released by singer Johnny Mathis in the United States.

Overview

This is a two record set that featured the songs of two composers. The first record was devoted to the work of Bert Kaempfert while the second featured that of Burt Bacharach. The release of this set marks the first instance where Mathis devoted a full album to the music of a single composer.

The Kaempfert album was recorded in Europe in 1969 and was released as a single record album in the United Kingdom in that year. When the album was released in the United States in 1970, it was combined with a compilation of previously released album cuts of Bacharach songs from Mathis' work with Columbia Records. It is interesting to note that while Mathis recorded Bacharach songs during his four year stint with Mercury Records none of that material was included on this album although he owned the masters to all his recordings with the label and had licensed some of that material to Columbia Records in the previous year for two albums: People and The Impossible Dream.

The track listing below for the Bacharach compilation includes the album titles where each track first appeared.

Highlights

On the Kaempfert album, the 1966 song "If There's A Way", was originally recorded by Kaempfert for the "A Man Could Get Killed" album followed by Robert Goulet's single ("One Life One Dream b/w "If There's A Way") that charted but wasn't a hit in 1967, the balance of the other tracks being made up of cover versions of hits by other artists. "Wonderland by Night" was a #1 instrumental hit for Kaempfert in 1961, while "Strangers in the Night" also hit the top spot for Frank Sinatra in 1966. Mathis had previously recorded a version of this song on his album Johnny Mathis Sings just two years prior to the version heard here. "Danke Schoen" was a 1963 hit for Wayne Newton while "Spanish Eyes" was a 1966 hit for Al Martino. Adding to the number of songs recorded by Nat King Cole that Mathis would cover over the years is "L-O-V-E" which features lyrics by music industry pioneer Milt Gabler.
