Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is an Aboriginal-owned and controlled post-secondary institution at Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. The Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation are the Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca, and Tuscarora. The Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation reserve acreage at present covers some 46,000 acres (190 km2) near the city of Brantford, Ontario.

Aboriginal institutes partner with colleges and universities to offer students degree programs, apprenticeships, certificate programs and diploma programs. SNP was founded to provide greater access to post-secondary education for Aboriginal peoples. SNP delivers post-secondary programs approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The educational curriculum was adapted to meet the needs of Aboriginal learners to ensure it reflects community needs, cultural heritage and identity. SNP is a strong advocate of lifelong learning - evident in its initiatives to raise Aboriginal student entry into post-secondary education through educational programs offered at the elementary and secondary level.

History

Since 1993, Six Nations Polytechnic has offered college and university programs through agreements with public colleges and universities.

On June 26, 2009 – the Indigenous Knowledge Centre and Ogweho:weh Diploma Programs [Gayogohó:non-Cayuga and Kayenkeha -Mohawk] were publicly launched with the signing of the Six Nations and McMaster University Collaborative Agreement. These university credit diploma programs will eventually become full degree programs for Hodenosaunee languages.

On 15 December 2008, SNP conferred the title of Professor of Indigenous Knowledge on five persons who had contributed to preserving, promoting and imparting the centuries-long knowledge developed and nurtured in our community.

The Government of Canada sponsors an Aboriginal Bursaries Search Tool that lists over 680 scholarships, bursaries, and other incentives offered by governments, universities, and industry to support Aboriginal post-secondary participation. SNP scholarships for Aboriginal, First Nations and Métis students include:

Six Nations Achievement Centre

The Six Nations Achievement Centre was founded in 1993 as a community-based agency providing adults with tutoring in Literacy and Basic Skills, in a culturally sensitive manner to increase their academic skills for entry into higher level of education and/or to obtain employment. The funding is provided by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, Literacy and Basic Skills Branch. The Six Nations Achievement Centre is a member of the Brant Literacy Service Planning (LSP) and the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition. The programs offered include:

• Academic related assessments.
• One-to-one tutoring
• Refresher workshops
• Online learning
• Six-week "Pre-GED" connection program
• Essential skills and workforce literacy
• Career and/or college preparation sessions
• New computer training for adults with no computer experience
• Crafting for Employment Workshops
• Networking

Campus

Main campus is a building located on 2160 Fourth Line in Oshweken, Ontario.

Ogwehoweh Skills and Trades Training Centre located at 16 Sunrise Court is a complex consisting of three two storey buildings that mimics longhouses.
