As Chapel Hill's premiere residential, shopping, dining and entertainment destination, Southern Village is the ideal location for Chapel Hill's first hotel south of downtown. This summer construction will begin on an upscale 110-room Hyatt Place Hotel. The hotel will be located on US 15-501, between the Market Street and Arlen Park Drive entrances to Southern Village.
The Hyatt Place's front will face the highway and the rear of the hotel will face the Southern Village Apartments district. An attractive stairway to Barksdale Drive will make it easy for hotel guests to walk to the Village Center for dining, shopping and movies.
Southern Village was conceived around three guiding principles: design, density and destination. These founding ideals account for the neighborhood's charming small-town feel, with its emphasis on walkability, green spaces, pedestrian-friendly architecture, community and convenience. The hotel will build on these traditions in both form and spirit.
Southern Village is a 312-acre (1.3 km2) New Urbanism neighborhood located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Established in 1994, Southern Village includes 550 single-family homes, 375 townhomes and condominiums, 250 apartments, and 350,000 square feet (33,000 m2) of retail, office, and civic space. Southern Village was the top selling neighborhood in the Triangle market from 1999 to 2001. Nationally recognized as an example of smart growth, Southern Village has been featured in numerous publications including TIME, Better Homes & Gardens, and Builder magazines.
Business District
Southern Village housed the headquarters for the John Edwards for President Campaign of 2007. Also offered are a movie theater, a bank, numerous restaurants, several small shops, a pharmacy, a grocery store, a dentist, and several doctor's offices.
Education
The neighborhood is home to Mary Scroggs Elementary School, which is part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.[1]
Recreation
The community is served by the southern, and only completed end, of the Fan Branch Trail, commonly called by local residents, the greenway. This trail forms part of a bike trail system planned for the Chapel Hill area. The Southern Community Park,[2] which abuts the Village offers soccer fields and a dog-walking park, a playground and cookout area, and a roller hockey rink, as well as an extension of the Fan Branch Trail.
Culture
The North Carolina Symphony visits once a year to give a free outdoor concert on the Village Green.[3] Pop pieces from films such as Mission Impossible, Star Wars and Superman are often featured, along with such favorites as Turkey in the Straw and the William Tell Overture. Furthermore, there are often festivals in the central area and during the summer (weather permitting) there are outdoor movies.[4]
Transportation
The village is served by Chapel Hill Transit,[5] connecting the community Park and Ride lot with downtown Chapel Hill, and with the nearby University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Service is provide during full service periods, Monday through Friday only, with a special "Safe Ride" late night service Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.[6]
