States of India by Punjabi speakers
This is a list of States and Union Territories of India by speakers of Punjabi as of census 2001 and the linguistic report. Gross population figures are available online. down The Indian censuses record the native languages, but not the descent of the citizens. Linguistic data cannot accurately predict ethnicity: for example, Punjabis make up a large minority of Delhi's population but some descendants of the Hindu and Sikh refugees who came to Delhi following the partition of India now speak Hindi natively. Thus, there is no concrete official data on the ethnic makeup of Delhi[1]:8–10 or of any other state or union territory of India.
As per the 1961 Census of India, 65.6% of Punjab-proper spoke Punjabi. What is now Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh were part of what was then East Punjab until 1966, including those figures, Punjabi speakers become 41.1%.[2] The use of Punjabi as a percent of the state population in modern Punjab-proper has gradually increased since the reorganisation and generally declined in other states.
