Stephen Michael Gleeson (born 3 August 1988) is an Ireland international footballer who plays as a midfielder for Birmingham City.

Club career

Born in Dublin,[1] Gleeson played for Cherry Orchard before moving to England to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he received a three-year contract at the start of May 2006 having come up through the club's Academy.[3]

In the 2006–07 season he went on loan to Stockport County for three months, making his senior debut on 11 November 2006 in a 2–1 victory at Exeter City in the FA Cup. He impressed at County, scoring two goals from midfield and playing an influential part in their nine match winning streak, without conceding a goal.[citation needed]

On returning to Wolves, he made four substitute appearances, including in their play-off semi-final second-leg defeat at West Bromwich Albion. The following season, his only first-team appearance for the club came in a League Cup game.[4] To gain playing time, he joined League Two Hereford United on 21 February 2008 on a month's loan.[5] However, this was unsuccessful and fans became annoyed with his attitude, especially during a match against Stockport where Gleeson showed no desire throughout the match, prompting an early end to the loan spell.[citation needed]

After spending a couple of days back with his home club, Gleeson returned on loan to Stockport County on 26 March 2008 until the end of the season. His first goal after his return to Edgeley Park was at Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off semi-final. Gleeson then appeared in the Wembley final where the club won promotion to League One after beating Rochdale.[4] His semi-final goal was later voted Stockport's Goal of 2008 by fans,[6] and also chosen by manager Jim Gannon as his favourite goal of the year.[citation needed]

His association with Stockport continued again the following season as he spent the first half of the campaign on loan again with them.[7] He returned to his parent club but again went out on loan, this time to League One club Milton Keynes Dons in March 2009 for the remainder of the season.[8] He helped the club reach the play-offs, but suffered ankle ligament damage which led him to miss their unsuccessful bid for promotion to the Championship.[citation needed]

Milton Keynes Dons

He subsequently joined MK Dons on a permanent basis on 1 July 2009, in a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.[9] Although a feisty, yet influential midfielder, never afraid to become embroiled in the occasional confrontation on the pitch, (which occasionally ended with a dismissal), he eventually settled down to become one of the most revered players with which the MK Dons fans have very much come to admire.[peacock term]

Gleeson scored a "wonder goal" from 30 yards (27 m) against Leyton Orient on 25 January 2011,[10] prompting many fans to call out "Shoot!" any time he had the ball in an opposition's half for a considerable number of matches afterwards.[citation needed]

Gleeson produced another goal from distance on 2 December 2012, the first goal ever scored in a match between MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon. The Dons went on to win 2–1 to progress to the third round of that season's FA Cup.[11] A couple of weeks later, he suffered a break in his left foot during training, which kept him out of action until a match against Doncaster Rovers on 5 March 2013, which he celebrated with a goal to seal a 3–0 victory at Stadium mk.[12]

During a couple of matches in April 2013, Gleeson wore the captain's armband owing to Dean Lewington's absence through injury, and scored a late winner against Brentford to secure a second consecutive win.[13] He then had to leave the field through injury just after half-time in a 2–0 win against Swindon Town.[14]

Birmingham City

Gleeson signed a two-year contract with Championship club Birmingham City when his MK Dons contract expired at the end of the 2013–14 season.[15] He made his debut in the starting eleven for the opening-day defeat at Middlesbrough.[16]

International career

Gleeson was called up to the Irish Under 19 squad for a friendly tournament in La Manga in February 2006, despite being a year younger than most of his colleagues, and was also named in the squad for the Under-19 European Championship qualifying rounds in May 2006. He also represented his country at Under 21 level, scoring twice on his debut, a 2–2 draw against Germany on 21 August 2007.

He made his full international debut for the Republic of Ireland against Ecuador on 23 May 2007 in a 1–1 friendly draw at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey, United States.
