Rabbi Tamara Kolton is a spiritual teacher and psychologist in Detroit, Michigan. Her psychology practice integrates spiritual practices with clinical psychology.
Rabbi Kolton is the first rabbi ordained in Humanistic Judaism.[1]
She was ordained in October 1999 at the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, having received her PhD in Rabbinic Studies in August 1999; her dissertation was written on the experience of female rabbis.[1] She became the senior rabbi of the Birmingham temple in 2003 and served the congregation until 2012.
In 2012, Rabbi Kolton created an innovative spiritual program called Soulful Living and taught as a Scholar In Residence at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy, Michigan. She describes herself as a "Rabbi Beyond Denominations," drawing from best Jewish practices as well as great teachings from indigenous and Buddhist traditions. (Detroit Jewish News May, 2013.) She has conducted hundreds of weddings and funerals and is a "Go-To Rabbi" for interfaith weddings.
Rabbi Dr. Kolton is currently working on her first book about the path of spiritual transformation.
She is married to Isaac Kolton, an Israeli born in Petah Tikva.[2] Together they are raising their two children, Lior and Maya.[2]
