The TEDxSanta Cruz is an independent TEDx event. TEdx events can be organized by anyone who obtains a free license from TED, agreeing to follow certain principles.[3] TEDx events are non-profit, but may use an admission fee or commercial sponsorship to cover costs.[4] Similarly, speakers are not paid. They must also relinquish the copyrights to their materials, which TED may edit and distribute under a Creative Commons license.

History

It was started by a retired Cabrillo College Professor, David Warren, who was drawn to the new TEDx program description. "It was an epiphany for me as I saw how I could satisfy my insatiable curiosity while meeting some of the most inspired people in our community and beyond. I applied immediately". Only until after receiving the license did he really start thinking about how it was going to manifest.[5]

Overview

The x in TEDx refers to independently organized TED conference events, an initiative that started in 2008 to bring TED-like gatherings to smaller communities — like Santa Cruz.[6] These events — 1,500 of them scheduled all over the world so far in 2015 — spark conversation and connection with the spirit of "ideas worth spreading".[7] At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These self-organized events are branded TEDx and are subject to certain rules and regulations. Talks and music performances at TEDx events are licensed creative commons. This initiative is independently organized by a group of successful entrpreneurs, artists, philanthropists, and educators Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. In 2011 the first TedxSanta Cruz called "engage", had a speaker named Rachel Pike, who worked for a venture capitalist firm named Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), which she discussed climate change innovation. Rachel got her Ph.D. in atmospheric chemistryat the University of Cambridge [8]

In 2015, TEDxSanta Cruz was attended by hundreds in the sold-out Rio Theatre crowd for talks titled “Radical Collaboration.” [9] The organizers of TEDxSanta Cruz don’t just talk about this year’s theme, ‘radical collaboration’—they live it [10] This years event had more than 20 speakers including, Christine Hutton, academic dean and science department chair at the Kirby School presenting.[11]

The TEDxSanta Cruz was founded by David Warren in 2011. David feels that "TEDx as a program is just in its toddler stage, yet the program has spread to 130 countries in more than 800 cities around the world. More tan 3,190 TEDx events have happened and have resulted in the uploading of 12,900 talks with 45 million views".[5]
