General Telmo Oswaldo Vargas Benalcázar (born 9 October 1912) was Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Ecuador, who overthrew the military junta of Ramón Castro Jijón on 29 March 1966.[1][2] 36 hours later, Clemente Yerovi was appointed president on 30 March. He is currently the oldest living (or at least known to be living) former head of state.[citation needed]
