Terra Nostra (English: Our Land) is a Brazilian telenovela, which was produced by and broadcast on Rede Globo in 1999.

The story is set in the late 19th century and takes place at a time when slaves were freed in Brazil and there was a need for workers, especially on the coffee fazendas (plantations) of Brazil. As a result, new laborers were sought and a large number of Italians, looking for a better life, immigrated to Brazil to work there.

Unlike many telenovela stories, the characters are not larger than life in "Terra Nostra." Instead, they are like everyday people who make everyday decisions. Consequently, the viewers can relate to what is happening in the story.

"Terra Nostra" was written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa and directed by Jayme Monjardim. Both men are responsible for writing and directing other first-rate stories. The telenovela has many shots of nature and scenery.

Musical director, Marcus Viana, puts together a music soundtrack for the telenovela. It is mainly filled with traditional Italian songs that are performed musicians such as Charlotte Church, Caetano Veloso, Zizi Possi, and Jerry Adriani. The soundtrack also includes original instrumental music by Viana, also a musician with experience from making soundtracks for other shows.

"Terra Nostra" has been successfully shown worldwide, from places such as Tahiti, Russia, Greece, Canada, Peru, the United States of America, Mauritius, Serbia, Hungary, and Philippines to Italy, Spain, Croatia, Macedonia, Portugal, Romania and many more. Plot

The setting is Brazil between the end of nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Most of the story takes place in farm s Coffee of inside of São Paulo, showing the Italian immigration in Brazil, especially the romance of Giuliana and Matteo, two Italian immigrants who were trying to better life on Brazilian soil.

Giuliana is the daughter of Giulio and Ana, Italian immigrants who leave their country and come to Brazil the advice of a fellow friend, Francesco. On the ship, the girl falls in love with Matteo, and the two make plans to marry when they reach Brazil, even if the two do not know right. The death of the parents of Giuliana, of the Black Death (disease caused by the rat flea), and a mild infection of the disease Matteo even closer the couple, passing a burning night of love together, the first time of Giuliana, before the ship dock at the port of Santos.

The landing mess, Giuliana and Matteo are lost and follow different paths. She is welcomed by Francesco (Raul Cortez), a banker millionaire friend of his deceased parents, married to Janet, boastful and arrogant woman, and father of Mark Antony a bon vivant. Have Matteo will work on the farm of Gumercindo, a coffee baron who is married to Maria do Socorro and sweet father of Angelica and cruel Rosana.

Once you see the Italian, Marco Antonio falls madly in love with her. Francesco welcomes his son's wedding, but not Janet. Giuliana also rejects the love of Mark Antony, it is determined to rediscover Matteo. But when she discovers expecting a son Matteo, Marco Antonio there sees the chance to be with your loved one. And to prevent Angelica join the convent, Gumercindo accept the application of Augusto wedding, young man with dreams of becoming political.

Augustus, however, maintains an affair with Paola, beautiful and fiery Italian who arrived in the same leads that Matteo and Giuliana. To prevent Anacleto, the father of the young, force him to marry her, Augusto riding a home for the girl in the São Paulo, and marries Angelica as the plans already set. Subsequently, however, Angélica and Augusto move to São Paulo, and Paola becomes Angelica's friend. Thus, Paola realizes that Augusto has a good woman, and breaks the case with him.

However, for business reasons, Gumercindo (Antonio Fagundes) approaches Francesco. At this point, Matteo (Thiago Lacerda) is already married with Rosana (Carolina Kasting), with whom he has a son, and Giuliana had a daughter with Mark Antony, Annie. But the real destination Giuliana and Matteo's son is discovered, and the marriage of Francesco and Janet goes down, and Giuliana also separates from Mark Antony.

But for both live this great love, left leaving the past behind, and that includes two stones on the way the couple will have to be overcome: The disgusting Rosana and the egocentric Mark Antony. But in the end everything works out, Giuliana marries Matteo and they have another child, and Matteo accepts create Annie, daughter Giuliana with Mark Antony and are very happy to rediscover the child they had.

Plot

This historical telenovela tells the story of these Italian immigrants. It focuses on the relationship of Giuliana Esplendore and Matteo Batistela (Actors Ana Paula Arosío and Thiago Larceda) who meet each other during the voyage to Brazil.

Giuliana and Matteo immediately fall in love and plan a life together. Unfortunately, fate and some people do not plan it that way. A series of mishaps befall the couple and keep them apart. When they finally reunite, their conduct affects not only their lives, but also other people they have met along the way.

Moral issues arise which produce fruitful debate for the television viewers. There are no simple answers because none of the characters or issues are strictly right or wrong, black or white. The issues and personalities are gray and will cause the viewers to change their minds during the storyline.
