"The Netherlands" refers today to three political entities:

"The Netherlands" can have a broader meaning, for which the term Low Countries may be used. This is because the area called "the Netherlands" historically also comprises the "nether lands" outside of the modern-day Netherlands (in Belgium, Luxemburg, Northern France and Germany). "The Netherlands" in its original meaning is still used in historical context, and also in the following geopolitical designations:

In 1839, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands split into three new countries. The northern part kept the name "Kingdom of the Netherlands", giving "Netherlands" the restricted meaning it has today. The other two parts were Belgium and Luxemburg. Striving for reunification led to another concept:
