TVC, known formally as The Volunteer Channel, is an American student university Student television station channel that originates on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The station airs original student programming. It is seen via the university’s on-campus cable system on channel 12 (analog), and digital channel 3-2.

Off-campus reception

The Volunteer Channel can also be viewed off-campus on Comcast Digital Channel 194 by 100,000 Comcast cable subscribers in Knox County (including Knoxville), as well as the neighboring counties of Anderson, Blount, Grainger, Jefferson, Roane, Sevier, and Union in East Tennessee. [1]

Programming

The purpose of this channel is to create original student programming. This Volunteer Channel’s programming consists of student-produced specials, and it also present special on-campus events, and Tennessee Volunteers sporting events produced by the media department. In addition, the channel also broadcasts . While these programs are produced by and for the students, they can also learn how to operate electronic devices used for producing the programs, including camerawork, directing, producing, writing scripts for the programs, and more.[2] [3] [4]

On-air personalities mainly consist of the university’s students who are pursuing a career as news writers, reporters, videographers, photographers, or producers and/or directors in any kind of media.

News Operation

TVC also produces a 30-minute-long newscast. It mainly consists of events and news within the campus, as well as a summary of current nationwide and international events. However, unlike the major over-the-air stations in the area (i.e. WVLT, WBIR, and WATE), TVC News is actually produced on a weekly basis rather than daily. [5]

Other original programs[6]

  • Sports Mecca - a weekly sports program focusing on the Tennessee Volunteers sports programs, as well as national sporting news
  • Hot Topix - a call-in show where current events are discussed.
  • On The Prowl - behind the scenes look at happenings at the Knoxville Zoo.
