The Woolf Institute is an academic institute in Cambridge, England, dedicated to the study of relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims.[1] It consists of the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations (CJCR), the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations (CMJR) and the Centre for Policy and Public Education (CPPE). The Woolf Institute is named in honour of Lord Harry Woolf, former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales[2] and was founded by Dr Edward Kessler MBE.

The Woolf Institute is based in the Margaret Beaufort Institute and is a member of the Cambridge Theological Federation which brings together eleven institutions through which people of different churches, including Anglican, Methodist, Orthodox, Reformed and Roman Catholic, train for various forms of Christian ministry and service [3]

The Centre for the Study of Jewish Christian Relations (CJCR)

The Centre for Jewish-Christian Relations (CJCR) was established in 1998 to further the academic study of Jewish-Christian relations throughout the ages.

Successful courses in the past include the Master of Studies (MSt) in the Study of Jewish–Christian Relations, a two-year, part-time University of Cambridge degree, offered by the CJCR in conjunction with the Faculty of Divinity and the Institute of Continuing Education.[4]

Currently the Centre runs a number of site-based and e-learning courses, including: "Jews, Christians and Muslims in Europe: Modern Challenges",[5] a three-part e-learning course focusing on relationships between Jews, Christians and Muslims and their impact on modern Europe and an "Introduction to Judaism" for the Cambridge Theological Federation.

The Centre for the Study of Muslim Jewish Relations (CMJR)

The Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations is the first and only European centre dedicated to fostering a better understanding of relations between Muslim and Jews through teaching, research and dialogue. CMJR works with a variety of academic partners, including the American University in Washington with whom it delivers the e-learning programme "Bridging the Great Divide: the Jewish-Muslim encounter".[6]

The Centre for Policy and Public Education (CPPE)

The Centre for Policy and Public Education was established in order to ensure that the teaching and research of the Woolf Institute is accessible to people who are unable to study full-time, in recognition of the relevance of the Institute's research to professional contexts. The Centre works with a range of organisations delivering education programmes for public sector bodies, such as the National Health Service (NHS), Cambridgeshire County Council and for wider community-based groups and faith communities.[7] Since 2013 the Institute has regularly delivered educational courses to staff of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Ministry of Defence as well as contributed to the European External Action Service to facilitate understanding of the interaction of religion, policy and diplomacy.[8]

University links

The Woolf Institute currently works together with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust to offer the Woolf Institute Cambridge Scholarship, a PhD scholarship for the study of relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims.[9] In 2012 it was also announced that the Institute will also contribute to the newly reconstituted MPhil in Middle East Studies at the University of Cambridge [10][11]
