Timothy E. Ryan as of September, 2015 is the publisher and CEO of the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union Tribune.[1] He was previously publisher and chief executive officer of The Baltimore Sun Media Group (BSMG), the largest media portfolio in Maryland, beginning in March 2007.[2][3] In 2010, he also became publisher and CEO of The Morning Call Media Group (MCMG),[4] the leading newspaper and website in Lehigh Valley, PA. The LA Times, Union-Tribune, Baltimore Sun and The Morning Call are publications of Tribune Publishing.

The Baltimore Sun and BSMG

Under Ryan’s leadership, BSMG experienced a resurgence in the midst of the most competitive environment the media industry has ever known. Ryan significantly expanded the company’s audience in Maryland, making BSMG the media market leader in the state. BSMG now owns three daily news publications, more than 30 community publications, and five major digital news platforms.[5] With The Baltimore Sun print circulation at 162,067 daily and 285,756 on Sunday,[6] and content available across all digital platforms, the company’s audience is its largest in its 178-year history.

In 2014, Ryan led BSMG’s further expansion into Maryland with several multi-million dollar acquisitions of leading daily publications. These investments significantly extended the brand’s local news coverage and advertising footprint.

In February 2014, Ryan spearheaded the purchase of the popular alternative weekly City Paper. As of August 2015, the City Paper had a weekly circulation of 50,025, with 236,194 unique visitors each month to its digital and mobile apps.[7]

In May 2014, BSMG completed the strategic acquisition of The Capital in Annapolis, the Carroll County Times and other area publications and digital properties from Landmark Media Enterprises. Leading the industry, the acquisition leveraged the Baltimore Sun Media Group’s management, shared services and operations to drive business efficiencies and accelerate the digital transformation of the individual brands. Under Ryan’s leadership, the publications have since been fully integrated into the Baltimore Sun Media Group portfolio.

During Ryan’s tenure, BSMG also entered into a number of strategic partnerships, including an agreement to print and distribute The Washington Times, a content share agreement with the Washington Post and a digital partnership to leverage video with WJZ-TV, the local CBS affiliate.[8]

Since Ryan became publisher and chief executive officer of BSMG, The Baltimore Sun revitalized its reputation for award-winning journalism. The Baltimore Sun rehired its prize-winning political cartoonist Kevin (KAL) Kallaugher, installed a new Life & Travel section and rebranded and expanded Friday’s entertainment section, wknd. Ryan also made a commitment to watchdog journalism and established a dedicated investigative news staff, Sun Investigates.

In 2010, Ryan named Mary J. Corey Senior Vice President and Director of Content, making her the first female news editor to lead the newsroom in the 176-year history of The Baltimore Sun.[9] In 2013, Ryan also established the Mary J. Corey Journalism Internship honoring her legacy.

The Morning Call and MCMG

With his added role of Publisher and CEO for MCMG in 2010, Ryan has grown the media group from the leading local daily newspaper in the Lehigh Valley to a multiplatform media and marketing solutions company, with two magazines, a weekly Hispanic publication and a suite of digital products and services, including a growing digital marketing services business.

MCMG reaches more than 400,000 people each week,[10] and the nearly 120-year-old daily newspaper, The Morning Call, remains the third largest in Philadelphia[11] with a daily circulation of 73,747 and a Sunday circulation of 117,665.[12]

Digital Innovation

Since Ryan was named publisher of BSMG, baltimoresun.com has substantially enhanced revenues while becoming the #1 news website in Maryland, with 6,778,788 unique visitors and over 34 million page views each month.[13][14] In 2011, Ryan was a pioneer in the industry, leading the efforts for the first Tribune property to launch a digital subscription model. Since then, the model has been adopted by a growing number of publishers, as news access increasingly moves to digital platforms.

In 2014, Ryan announced a major redesign of the website providing a new digital experience that centered on delivering value to users and clients. As a result of Ryan’s decision to create a platform-agnostic mobile site and app, the redesign boosted mobile traffic to the websites.

Themorningcall.com was the first east coast Tribune Publishing property to transform its website to this new platform that has increased reader and advertiser engagement. Themorningcall.com has an average of 14,651,436 monthly page views and 2,187,538 monthly unique visitors.[15]

Within a year of the BSMG strategic acquisitions, Ryan launched full website redesigns for citypaper.com, carrollcountytimes.com and capitalgazette.com.

As part of his strategic digital strategy, the advertising divisions now sell across platforms, offering advertisers a full suite of digital solutions to market their brands. Providing innovative ad positions, email marketing and branded content, Ryan has transformed the advertising options for local, regional and national clients.

Awards

In recent years, members of the Maryland/Delaware/DC (MDDC) recognized BSMG for its excellence in print and digital journalism, presenting it with 157 awards in 2014 alone.[16] The Baltimore Sun, The Carroll County Times and The Aegis were all named Newspaper of the Year in their respective divisions.[17] This is the eighth time in nine years that The Baltimore Sun was named “Newspaper of the Year.” In addition, The Baltimore Sun won for General Website Excellence and was awarded the James S. Keat Freedom of Information Award.[18] MDDC also named The Aegis and the Howard County Times “Newspaper of the Year” in their divisions in 2013.

The Baltimore Sun won an 2014 Online Journalism Award from the Online News Association for explanatory reporting, medium category. The award recognized The Baltimore Sun’s online presentation included videos, graphics and interactive elements. [19]

Kevin “KAL” Kallaugher was named the 2015 winner of the Herblock Prize, among the most prestigious awards for editorial cartooning.[20] He also was a finalist for a 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. [21]

The Morning Call’s watchdog journalism has been a five-time recipient of the G. Richard Dew Award for Journalistic Service, the Pennsylvania News Media Association’s highest award.[22] And in 2012, The Morning Call received The Gerald Loeb Award, one of the most prestigious national honors in business journalism.[23]

Early Career

Ryan, who has over 30 years of experience in the media business, came to The Baltimore Sun after serving as vice president of circulation and consumer marketing since 2005 at the Chicago Tribune. There, Ryan had responsibility for sales, marketing and distribution throughout Chicago and the Midwest. His achievements included the successful expansion of RedEye, the rapidly growing young-adult oriented edition of Chicago Tribune, and the growth of the industry's leading loyalty program, Subscriber Advantage. [24]

Prior to his work at the Chicago Tribune, Ryan served as vice president of circulation and operations at The Baltimore Sun from July 2000 to February 2005. Ryan also worked as vice president of circulation at the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1993 to 2000.[25] When Ryan was appointed publisher in 2007, The Baltimore Sun described Ryan as “…very engaged in the news. He’s a news junkie… [In his previous role as circulation director] he obviously wanted to sell newspapers, but it was way beyond that. It seemed to be a passion of his.” [26]

Education

Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.[27]
