Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), which occurs annually on November 20, is a quasi-religious festival held by the LGBT movement to promote the idea that transgender people are victims and martyrs.[1] [2] It promulgates the fallacy that transgender people are more likely than others to be murdered and that if they are killed, it must be because of a generalized "culture of violence" against them. These claims are not borne out by crime statistics.

It was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a man who identifies as a woman,[3] The day commemorates the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. However, this choice of martyr is flawed because the killer of Rita Hester was never identified and investigators concluded that "The motive for the attack remains a mystery." So there is no evidence for the "transphobia" theory. [4]

It is a fact that many men who disguise themselves as women become prostitutes, which is a dangerous occupation and has a higher than average likelihood of violent death.

Since its inception, TDoR has been held annually on November 20,[5] and it has slowly evolved from the web-based project started by Smith into an international day of action. In 2010, TDoR was observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 countries.[6]

Typically, a TDoR memorial includes a reading of the names of those who lost their lives during the previous year,[7] and may include other quasi-religious actions, such as candlelight vigils intended to bestow martyr status on the deceased.[8] The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has extensively covered TDoR.[9] GLAAD has interviewed numerous transgender advocates[10] (including actress Candis Cayne[11]), profiled an event at the New York City LGBT Community Center,[12] and discussed media coverage of TDoR.[13]
