TrekMovie.com is a news blog website about the Star Trek franchise with news reports about Star Trek feature films, series, and a multitude of other categories related to the Star Trek fandom.
History
TrekMovie.com was launched July 15, 2006 (as The Trek XI Report), the same day it was announced that J. J. Abrams had finalized a 5-year deal with Paramount Pictures which included a new Star Trek film as his first project. With this news along with other news of Trek’s return to the worlds of comics and video games it was clear that the Trek franchise was ‘coming back’. The site was founded by Anthony Pascale, a Trek fan since childhood in the 70s. Pascale’s vision was for a site that was focused on bringing the latest and most accurate news and information about Star Trek to the fans.
In just a few months TrekMovie.com established a reputation for scooping the big Trek news, and was regularly cited as a source by sites like Aint It Cool News, Slashdot, Fark, Cinematical, TV Squad, SciFiWire, Dark Horizons, Yahoo Movies and many others. TrekMovie and Anthony Pascale have even been cited on the cable network G4TV, local TV stations and in The Wall Street Journal. TrekMovie.com grew by bringing on a diverse range of editors and contributors, all of whom were respected experts covering different areas of the Star Trek franchise. As of 2008 the site was the highest ranked Star Trek news site and continued to grow.[1]
Rumored "Demise" and controversy
After late May 2013 the site often went weeks or months with no updates. When updates resumed, no explanation was given. After the release of 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, the site posted an article about the film's second week of release, and then went for several weeks without any new updates. For a significant period of time Anthony Pascale did not post or write anything for the site.
The site was a source of controversy shortly after the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, when guest writer Joseph Dickerson's op-ed "Is Star Trek Broken?"[2] (which opined that the new Trek film had moved too far from the themes that made Star Trek relevant and popular) generated thousands of comments, including harsh reaction by the co-writer of the film Robert Orci. Orci's comments, that criticized fans negative reaction and the op-ed, were covered by multiple news sites.[3][4][5] Orci later apologized and (for a while) stopped commenting on the Trek Movie site.[6]
In recent months, however, articles have been posted on a more regular basis, thanks to editors Matt Wright and Kayla Iacovino, who have devoted their spare hours to the site's maintenance. Anthony Pascale has returned to regularly post articles, as the news around the upcoming Star Trek 3 sequel film has increased in frequency. However, the number of comments and traffic are significantly lower than at the site's peak (which was before the premiere of the first Trek film).
