Vamizi Island is a crescent-shaped private island in Mozambique's Quirimbas Archipelago. It is owned by a group of developers.[1]

History

Vamizi Island, then called Amisa, was visited by Arab sailors during the 15th century. At the time, the island's population was primarily Muslim. Portuguese traders were attracted to the island by its Maluane cloth industry. Other major industries in Vamizi included the production or collection of indigo, timber, ivory, manna gum and turtle shells.[2]

Biodiversity and conservation

Vamizi is home to more than 180 different species of coral and more than 400 species of reef fish.[3] Much of the island is protected, with several conservation projects in operation.[3] The island's turtle population, previously exploited for turtle shells, is now protected.[2]

Climate

Vamizi has a tropical climate.[4]

Economy

Tourism and fishing are major sectors in the island's economy.
