Varendra Rebellion

[1]The Varendra Rebellion (also known as the Kaivarta revolt) was the first revolt of the Bengali people. The Pala kings ruled the Bengal region from 750 AD. King DharmaPala and DevPala were successful rulers. At the end of the golden period, there was disorder during the rule of King Mahipala II in 1070 AD; his lack of ability to rule was detected by the common people. While the king was distracted, the Kaivarta (fishermen) community started a rebellion against King Mahipal. Divya lead the revolt and the rebels captured the Varendra part of the kingdom. The rebels fought in the water ways as they were skilled in boating. King Mahipala tried to attack his younger brother Rudoka and the latter's son Vima established authority in the area. But, the son of Mahipala, RamPala, became the king. He led an expedition to Varendra and successfully captured the area by the co-operation of the kings of neighboring lands. Thus, the first rebellious revolt of Bengal had come to an end.[2]
