Victor Kraatz, MSC (born April 7, 1971) is a Canadian ice dancer. In 2003, he and his partner, Shae-Lynn Bourne, became the first North American ice dancers to win a World Championship.

Career

Victor Kraatz began to skate at the age of 9. In Switzerland he became an ice dancer and skated with Analisa Beltrami (Switzerland). After having moved to Canada, he teamed up with Taryn O'Neill. On April 20, 1991, Kraatz began skating with Shae-Lynn Bourne, who had been a pair skater until that time.

Bourne / Kraatz missed the 2000 Four Continents and 2000 World Championships due to Bourne's knee surgery.[1] In spring 2000, they changed coaches, moving to Tatiana Tarasova and Nikolai Morozov.[1]

Bourne / Kraatz withdrew from their 2002 Grand Prix events due to Bourne's injury.[2] They won their 10th Canadian national title and then took their third Four Continents title. Bourne / Kraatz went on to win gold at the 2003 World Championships. They retired from competition at the end of the season.

Their coaches included Josée Picard, Eric Gillies, Tatiana Tarasova, Natalia Dubova, Uschi Keszler, Marina Klimova, Sergei Ponomarenko, and lastly Nikolai Morozov.

Kraatz represented the club of Boucherville while Bourne represented Brossard FSC, in the Quebec section. Their final training location was Newington, Connecticut.

Bourne / Kraatz are the first World champions in ice dancing representing Canada. They were the first ice dancers to include hydroblading elements in their routines.

Personal life

Born in West Berlin, Kraatz grew up in Switzerland and later moved with his mother to Canada.[2] On June 19, 2004, Victor Kraatz and Finnish ice dancer Maikki Uotila were married in Helsinki, Finland. Their first son, Oliver, was born September 14, 2006, in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Their second son, Henry, was born on July 10, 2010.[3]
