Vimal Jyothi Engineering College, Chemperi is a private self-financing engineering college coming under the Catholic Management with minority status, established in the year 2002 in the state of Kerala, managed by The Meshar Diocesan Educational Trust, Archbishop's House, Thalassery.

History

The college was established along the hill valley of Malabar and is currently one of the largest self-financing engineering colleges in Kerala. It is ISO 9001:2008 certified and is affiliated to the Kannur University.Today around 2000 students undertake their undergraduate and post graduate courses here, under the expertise of over 100 qualified faculty members and research guides.It was one of the most controversial and criticized project undertaken by archdiocese of Tellicherry at that time.

Applied Electronics & Instrumentation

The course B. Tech in Applied Electronics & Instrumentation is under the Department of Electronics & Instrumentation. The department was started in 2005 with an intake of 60 students. The department having well qualified and experienced faculty members to improve and enhance the knowledge of the student community. The first batch of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation department passed out in 2009. Department won all 3 ranks in the year's 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013 from Kannur University. The department has good laboratory facilities equipped with the latest technologies. Laboratories under the Department of E&I are Process Control Instrumentation Lab, Industrial Instrumentation Lab, Virtual Instrumentation & Simulation Lab, Applied Electronics Lab & Advanced Digital Lab. For the development of its Students the Department signed an MoU with Yokogawa Industries Ltd. & Technophilia to conduct many training programs. The Department is publishing its Newsletter "Metron" in every 4 Months. Now the department has 15 teaching staff members & 3 Non teaching members. In the year 2013, Department has introduced M.Tech in Control & Instrumentation with an intake of 24.

Computer Science & Engineering

The first computing activity in Vimal Jyothi Engineering College was started in 2002.Department offers Undergraduate programme in Computer Science & Engineering. AICTE, approved the course. The center was initially allocated space in the same premises of Administrative Blocks. The first batch to graduate in 2005 and Ms.RAHMATH KOMBIL awarded the third rank in university. The center undertook several indigenous efforts to enhance both the software and hardware resources of this college. The center supported the entire computing needs of the academic community of Vimal Jyothi Engineering College Chemperi. By 2012 the number of faculty members rose to 14 and starts to offer Post Graduate Programme in Computer Science. "CESA" is the computer engineering students association, one of the active association of VJEC.The association was formulated for the overall development of the bright aspirants of the upcoming modern world.

Source of fund for structure development

Initially funds were contributed from parish members under Archdiocese of Thalassery. If a member donated a specific amount the trust authorities provided limited seats to them. Later the government of Kerala changed the admission procedures of self-financing colleges and discontinued providing seats.

Admission and Fee structure

Graduate Level Admission to the college is strictly as per the guidelines given by the Supreme Court of India and High Court of Kerala. The marks obtained by the students in the qualifying examination is considered along with the marks obtained in the Common Entrance Examination conducted by Kerala Government Commissioner of Entrance Examinations, with proper normalization. The rank list is prepared at the college level and students are admitted based on their merit and choice of course. A common prospectus is issued in this regard by Kerala Catholic Engineering College Management Association (KCEMA). Every student has to pay INR 1,000,00 as refundable, interest free caution deposit at the time of admission and INR 75,000 as yearly fees. Other statutory fee is to be paid as per the guidelines given in the Prospectus, which is approved by the monitoring committee headed by Retired Justice Mohammed (Known as Justice Mohammed Committee)and Kerala Entrance Commissioner .
