Marin Transit is a public bus agency in Marin County, California, in the United States. Originally formed in 1964 as Marin County Transit District (MCTD), it was rebranded as Marin Transit on 30 July 2007. In addition to using a new logo, Marin Transit has taken an active role in local bus service that historically have been planned and operated by Golden Gate Transit on behalf of MCTD.

Description

Marin Transit uses four contractors to provide public transit service within Marin County:

  • Golden Gate Transit operates all regular local fixed routes.
  • MV Transportation operates some West Marin Stagecoach fixed routes, the Muir Woods Shuttle, and supplemental local fixed routes that operate on school days only.
  • Marin Airporter operates all community shuttle fixed routes.
  • Whistlestop Wheels operates a West Marin Stagecoach fixed route, the Novato Dial-a-Ride demand-response service, and Marin Access ADA complementary paratransit service.

Marin Transit serves all major cities, towns, and communities within Marin County except Muir Beach, Nicasio, and Peacock Gap (East San Rafael).

History

Marin Transit was formed by a vote of the people of Marin County in 1964 and was given the responsibility for providing local transit service within Marin County. It has since played a key role in providing local transit service within the county through various funding sources (Measure A Funds, State Transportation Development Act Funds, fares, property taxes and Federal Section 5311 rural transit funds).[1] For a history of Marin Transit service in relation to Golden Gate Transit, click here.
