The Wolfline is an area bus service serving the students, staff, faculty, and general public on and around North Carolina State University's campus in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Wolfline is operated by First Transit, under contract with NC State's Transportation department. The Wolfline was the first mass transit organization in the state to exclusively use 'clean' diesel engines.[1] Wolfline access is unrestricted to the public and is a zero-fare service.[2] The preceding contractor was Veolia Transportation. The Wolfline began operating in August 1980 with one route.[3]

Currently, the Wolfline operates 12 routes on and between Main, Centennial, and the Veterinary School campuses. The Wolfprowl route has been added to the 12 campus-area routes as a continuously running shuttle to Downtown Raleigh during Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. These routes often coincide with Capital Area Transit and Triangle Transit Authority routes, facilitating movement about Raleigh by bus.

Of the 12 campus-area routes, 11 are daytime routes, and one is a "Werewolf" nighttime route. Over the summer, regular service is roughly cut in half. During student breaks, the Wolfline runs limited service routes, focused on moving faculty and staff around. The Wolfline does not run on federal holidays.[4]

Routes

  • Rt. 1 Avent Ferry, which serves Main Campus, housing and businesses on Avent Ferry Road, and Greek Way.
  • Rt. 2 Hillsborough St. Shuttle, which travels eastbound and westbound on Hillsborough Street, then to the apartments at Wolf Village and E.S. King Village.
    • There is also a separate Rt. 2 Hillsborough St. Night Shuttle, which only travels westbound on Hillsborough Street before heading to the apartments and circling around Main Campus.
  • Rt. 3 Engineering, which connects science and engineering academic buildings in North Campus with Central Campus and the College of Engineering buildings on Centennial Campus.
  • Rt. 4 Westgrove, which serves E.S. King Village, the Westgrove Park and Ride, and other locations to the north and west of Main Campus.
  • Rt. 5 Varsity, which serves Main Campus, the McKimmon Center, the Varsity and West parking lots, and the E.S. King Village.
    • There is also a Rt. 5/T Varsity Tripper which makes less stops than the normal Rt. 5.
