Emanuel Lasker defended the World Chess Championship for the first time in Moscow between November 6, 1896, and January 14, 1897. He faced William Steinitz, former World Champion whose title Lasker had taken in 1894. Lasker won by a score of +10 -2 =5, thus retaining his title.
