The York School (TYS) is a non-denominational and coeducational JK to grade 12 independent school. Located in the heart of Toronto, The York School was founded in 1965 and is the first school in Canada accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) from junior kindergarten (JK) to university entrance. The York School's motto is Experientia Docet or Experience Teaches.

History

In 1965, Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots established the school as a nursery school. In 1978, a toddler program and an elementary school were started. Grade 9 commenced in 1995.

Goodwin-Zeibots remained the head until retiring in the spring of 2006. [1] The current head of the school is Conor Jones.

In September 2010, The York School opened a second campus at 1639 Yonge Street. This location houses the Junior School L (JK-Grade 5) students.

The location at 1320 Yonge Street houses the Middle & Senior School Campus for Grades 6-12.

Factoids

The York School has two campuses. JK-Grade 5 students are at 1639 Yonge Street. Grades 6-12 are at 1320 Yonge Street, in the Summerhill district. The school also offers a variety of outdoor programs and excursions at Camp Oochigeas in Muskoka.

Sports are played against other members of the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association. [2]

As of 2014, annual tuition is $27,800 for Grades 1-12, $17,800 for Junior Kindergarten and $22,800 for Senior Kindergarten. There is also a $5,000 one time fee for registration.[3]

Laptops are used in Grades 6-12. iPads/Chromebooks are used in the Junior School.

The school was the first in all of Canada to have all three levels of the International Baccalaureate Program (Primary Years Program K-5, Middle Years Program 6-10 and Diploma Program 11-12), also known as the IB Continuum.

The Principal of the Junior School is Jennifer Wyatt. The Principal of the Middle School is Helen Gin. The Principal of the Senior School is David Hamilton.
