Zadara Storage is a computer data storage company founded in 2011, with headquarters in Irvine, California. The company also has offices in Yokneam, Israel.

Zadara provides Enterprise Storage-as-a-Service (STaaS) solution in public, private and hybrid clouds. For the storage consumer, Zadara provides enterprise-class VPSA[1] storage arrays with the same experience of physical arrays. Users enjoy the flexible, rich feature-set of today’s storage system, on an agile, cost-effective and elastic solution, based on an “as-a-service” business model.

Public and private cloud providers use the Zadara Storage Cloud to provision VPSA storage arrays to their customers based on a shared infrastructure - with dedicated drives and compute resources for each VPSA. This gives the cloud consumer a single-tenant experience, with shared economics. Both the provider and the consumer pay only per use.

Zadara storage is available via hyperscale clouds (AWS, Azure), local MSPs and CSPs, as well as on-premise in enterprise data-centers.[2] It enables hybrid solutions across on- and off-premise deployments. With Zadara Enterprise Storage-as-a-Service customers benefit a flexible storage array experience, save the capex investments on storage, do not commit for long periods, and avoid the migration to a new storage system every few years.[3]

History

Zadara Storage was founded by the management team of the former StoreAge Networking Technologies, which was acquired by LSI Corporation's Engenio storage systems division in 2006.[4] Engenio was ultimately acquired by NetApp, also in 2011.[5]

Technology

Zadara Storage develops and offers the Zadara Storage Cloud, a software-defined storage architecture which provides on-demand block and file storage, using software that runs on x86 hardware.[6] Zadara's software is a combination of proprietary and open-source software, including certain portions of the OpenStack project.[7] The patented,[8] award-winning technology combines Zadara's software with standard hardware to create the Zadara Storage Cloud, which can scale flexibly and be billed on a per-usage basis.[9] Because cloud services must remain up at all times, the Zadara Storage Cloud also features high availability, self-healing, and non-disruptive maintenance and migrations.[6]

The Zadara Storage cloud hardware includes 40Gbps ethernet switches and at least two Zadara Storage Nodes. The Zadara Storage Cloud scales by adding nodes in any increment.[6]

Products

Cloud VPSA

The company's first product was the Cloud Virtual Private Storage Array (VPSA).[10] A Cloud VPSA is an elastic instance which provides on-demand physical storage resources and has the features and capabilities of storage arrays, including data protection, data management, data protocols, and predictable performance. It is designed to combine the benefits of cloud computing with those of Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network-Attached Storage (NAS) systems. VPSAs use iSCSI, iSCSI Extensions for RDMA (iSER), Server Message Block (SMB/CIFS) or Network File System (NFS), to connect to compute servers in public clouds.[6] Each VPSA has dual controllers, and a dynamic choice of solid-state drives, serial attached SCSI or serial ATA drives. Zadara Storage provides performance isolation between users, security with data encryption and built-in billing capability.

Cloud VPSAs are offered in conjunction with public cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.[11]

OPaaS VPSA

The company followed up Cloud VPSA with On-Premise as a Service (OPaaS) VPSA. OPaaS VPSA provides physical, on-premise storage with a cloud business model, i.e., elastically and with no up-front cost or long-term commitment.[12] OPaaS VPSA is designed to provide the benefits of Cloud VPSA to private environments, which may prefer or be prevented by regulation from using public clouds.[12]

B2S3

VPSAs were later enhanced with Backup-to-S3 (B2S3), a pushbutton snapshot-based backup mechanism utilizing Amazon S3 and compatible object storage services.[13] B2S3 provides the ability to instantly restore backed-up data by mounting volumes directly from the object store containing the backup data.[13]

ZCS

The company also introduced Zadara Container Services (ZCS).[14] ZCS offers a the ability to run docker containers inside VPSAs.[15] ZCS is designed to provide the ability to run arbitrary software code inside the storage system, with low latency between the processor and the storage.[15]

ZIOS

In addition to block and file storage services, Zadara now offers ZIOS Object Storage[16] to fit the needs of any storage workload. ZIOS is a simple, easy to use, and well protected solution for storing multimedia data, big data, or archiving data of any sort. It provides easy access to storage anywhere, anytime and from any device over HTTP, and allows remote access to the data, even over the Internet.
